Anatomy Series
This 10-part series describes the circulatory, digestive, nervous, respiratory, skeletal, muscular, reproductive, urinary, integumentary, and endocrine systems.
The Immune Response (2011)
Other than swelling at a cut, and maybe some pus or a slight fever, we would be forgiven for not being aware of the existence of the human immune system. It is however a highly complex system, and when it is overwhelmed, things can get a lot more serious. In this informative and engaging program the three levels of immune defence are explored in isolation and as part of a disparate yet interconnected system. High quality animations are used to illustrate the nature of specific and nonspecific defence mechanisms deployed by the human immune system. The role of human intervention in the defence against disease is also explored.
Stroke: Understanding the Disease (2010)
In some cases, stroke is a life-threatening medical emergency that leaves the victim with permanent disability. But for many stroke patients, there's a lot that can be done through quick medical attention, good rehabilitation and community support.
In this programme, two stroke victims take us through their experiences and explain the affects stroke has had on their lives. We speak to experts, including Professor John Olver, Director of Rehabilitation at Epworth HealthCare to help us understand more about the physiology of stroke, what a stroke actually is, the warning signs, symptoms and risk factors.
Homeostasis
Homeostasis is an important regulatory system that allows organisms to maintain internal stability and metabolic efficiency within variable external environments. Our bodies are constantly being subjected to changes in such things as temperature, air quality, varied foods, sleep and physical exertion to name a few. This program introduces biology students to the phenomenon of homeostasis, why it is important and how it works. The mechanisms for detecting and counteracting changes are explored, along with the roles of the nervous and endocrine systems in maintaining a balance.
